Art in the Open
Yesterday, I went down to the river, the Schyukill River to be exact, to view the Art in the Open exhibit along the east bank. It began just below Boathouse Row, and the first artist I met, Denise Telang, was wonderful. I posted her photo below because she was the first artist along the route who seemed more than happy to speak with observers and tourists and people like me (“Wow! That’s so cool!” - the height of my conversational skills).
I also came across an igloo made of plastic water bottles, a sidewalk chalk artist, various painters, and even two women pinning gummy candies to white bases, making animals, etc.
Another interesting and delightful artist was Diane Savona. Diane was sewing a quilt of sorts, with dozens of tiny pocket squares, laid out like the city’s grid. In each pocket is a small wish or note that people passing by are asked to write. She then sews them up tight into their own individual pocket to never be opened again. I thought it was a wonderful project (of course I wrote my own little note).
